Turkish Lesson 1: Meaning and Usage of Letter Aa in Turkish

Aa is the first letter of Turkish alphabet. Similar to English, depending on where it is used in a sentence, it is used as an upper case A or lower case a.

 Examples: 

Ak sakal- white beard.

Ali ata bak. - Ali look at the horse. 

The second usage of the letter Aa is an exclamation- surprise, remembrance, joy, pity, sadness, anger, etc. It is expressed by saying a. This expression is very common and big part of cultural expression of emotions. 

Examples: 

A, öyle mi, hiç bahsetmemiştin. -Ohh really, you never mentioned it.

A hiç haberim olmadı bu olanlardan. - Ohh I never knew about these events. 

A neden  boşanmış? Ohh why did she get divorced?

Canım a hanım kızım! Niçin böyle kendini üzüyorsun? - My dear, ohh my young girl! Why are you making yourself sad like this?"

kızlar aklıma iyi bir fikir geldi. - Ohh girls, I have got an idea. 

A Hamdi Bey sizi gördüğüme çok sevindim. - Ohh, Mr. Hamdi, I am very happy to see you.
